Totterdown Road SW17 through (motor) traffic reduction scheme

The Council is consulting on proposals to reduce the volumes of through traffic using Totterdown Street.  The proposals comprise:

A new central island in Tooting High Street to deter traffic from entering Totterdown Street.

An entry treatment on Totterdown Street at the junction with Fransciscan Road to narrow the entry.

The planting of trees at intervals at the edges of the roadway between the parking spaces in order to improve the street scene and break up the straight alignment.

The plans can be seen here.

We are now looking at the plans in detail.  If you have any comments, particularly if you use Totterdown Road, please let us know what you think so that we can take your views into account.  We will post our response here.

  1. Could I suggest that to reduce through traffic that the road ceases to allow motorised traffic to flow through it.

It would return the street to it's predominantly residential use. Similar proposals to those for the end of Fishponds road could be used and result in significant reduction of motorised through traffic. I can't see that people walking or cycling down the street have been a problem.

  2. As shown on the plans the new central island in Tooting High Street will make it more difficult for cyclists to enter or leave Cycle Superhighway 7, which was only opened in July 2010. This seems rather wasteful of public money; surely part of the point having such a route is to make it safe and easy to access for cyclists from side streets. Is Transport for London Cycle Superhighway team aware of these proposals?

  3. John Irwin has kindly produced WCC's response on this scheme:

    Totterdown Rd

The central island proposed for Tooting High Street does not seem to take into account cyclists. Clearly the central island would reduce through traffic entering Totterdown Street. WCC suspects that this refers to motorised traffic, and not pedestrian/cycling "traffic". Perhaps a series of bollards could be put in place which would have the desired effect on motorised traffic whilst still allowing cyclists to "cut-through".

WCC would urge the council to consider a similar proposal to that which has been suggested for Fishponds Rd in the Broadwater Rd proposals. It seems clear that the desire is to ensure that these residential streets are used by residents for this purpose, and not for motorists to drive through at speed as a cut-through. The proposals on Broadwater Rd should reduce the "through-flow" of motorists in Totterdown St, as the council found a high proportion of motor vehicles originating from Gatton & Selkirk Rd passing through Totterdown St. If the aim is to reduce motorised through traffic, then clearly the most effective option is blocking the road to motorised through traffic as per Fishponds Rd.
